By definition a circle can not be a square. True a circle can contain a square (or any other formation) within it but to say a crop circle square would not be correct usage of geometry or language.
A square formation in a crop field would be labeled a crop formation (or crop square).

Crop squares, crop triangles. Sure. Depending what caused them. If you tie an animal to a 20 foot rope in a field, it will make a 40 foot in diameter circle for you.

I guess it depends on what tools the person who made it has. I'd think if they are made by aliens from another planet...they can do anything they want. I doubt they could find a way to come all the way to earth ,but not be able to make a square design.(Naturally "circles" can't be square)...but then ..the mathematicians could prove me wrong!!!

Yes, some friends that I know who do this as an art form constructed a square one, or at least it was made up of several squares. Said it was much easier than the circular kind.

They can be anything you want them to be. You just have to make sure to get out of the field before the farmer puts some lead into you.
