Why is it rookies think they can hold out for more money when they have not played a single down in the NFL.

Yes, they many have been excellent college players but that doesn't mean jack! Look at the draft the past few years and how many first round players really made an impact!

My thoughs are this, rookies should be signed to a one year contract and the money is based on where they are drafted, if they prove themselves and are great they will for sure get the opportunity to sign large contracts, however, if you flop then you will get the money you deserve.

This would also help out every team in the NFL because rookies would report to training camp on time and won't pay ridiculous money for someone who suck in the NFL

What do you all think? I know my response was kind of long, so sorry!

I agree will all who have answered so far, that they are looking at their best interest and playing the system, and I would too.

However, 9 out of 10 get rich doing nothing, meanwhile a quality athlete goes undrafted that would have taken anything you gave them

While I do not like it and think it is ridiculous, I think if either one of us where in the same position we would try and get as much as we could.

I agree with you, but it's not likely to change. Ever since players have been allowed to utilize the assistance of an agent, they have had the upper hand in the negotiations. Now, in cases like Brady Quinn's, signing was postponed because the agent. For some reason Brady and his agent though that he was deserving of top 5 money, even though he went so late in the first round.

I know right! Athletes are payed way to much if you ask me and then they pull this ego crap and they dont even seem to realize that if the fans get fed up and everyone stopped going to games....their done

Micheal Jordan talks about this in his book and he seems so wise for the unselfish way he has of looking at everything, more athletes need to be like him.

Are they playing for the money? Or the love of the game? Doesnt even need an answer as we all already know...

I agree with you here. I believe that you have to prove yourself before you can be rewarded. Wouldn't it be great if the league put a cap on what a rookie contract can be worth? I like your idea....makes sense to me. Maybe there could be some incentives that allow them to be paid based on performance during their rookie campaign.

I don't really have a problem with it.

If you ask me, professional athletes are all overpaid anyway, but I don't really care if a rookie is doing what he feels is necessary to get paid anyway.

What I'm saying is that I'm not going to hate on someone in a bad system taking advantage of it.

While it annoys me that they hold out, they're really just acting in their own best interests.

What really annoys me is the hold outs who already signed a contract. If you think you're worth more than you are getting paid, you should have signed a shorter contract so you can test your value on the open market sooner.

I agree. They have proven nothing and have no right to beg. I say give them the league minimum for year one and then we can reassess.
