Well, I was a virgin until I was 24, and the wait was worth it. No sign of any problems. This is a little like those studies that find that people who are severely underweight are more likely to die of cancer within a year -- cause and effect get confused. Some severely underweight people have lost weight because they already have cancer. Some older virgins have delayed sexual activity because they are messed up either physically or mentally. Such backwards reasoning distorts the results. Abstaining until you are mature and in love doesn't cause any problems. But problems such as fear or physical abnormalities or any number of psychological hangups can cause people to abstain for the wrong reasons. Those problems are not caused by abstinence!

Lumping together those who abstained because of high self esteem and a belief in the value of love with those who abstained because their hormone levels were low is bad science. And what the headlines are not mentioning is that the study also found problems in those who began having sex in their early teens -- that doesn't make juicy headlines, so it gets buried in the story.

Bad methodology leads to garbage results.

OK, I'll try to tackle this: You're basically at your sexual peak when you're around 19 or so. Look at the animal world; as soon as you reach sexual maturity, you're breeding or at least trying to. Now, somehow, we as a society have put a 'taboo' on being young and having sex; something about waiting until you're married and giving yourself as a virgin. What a load of crap. Sex is nothing more than reproduction. Period. Continuance (and sometimes betterment) of the species. Animals start humping as soon as they're able. Why should we be any different? People confuse 'love' and sex, or rather, they marry the two together. And they shouldn't do that. It's two totally different functions. So it's understandable that they've reached the conclusions they have. Older animals don't have sex; that's reserved for the younger of the species. And I'm sure that older animals have just as much sexual dysfunction as older human males do. Bottom line: get it while you're young. It's the best! And thanks for a GREAT question!

Don't believe everything you read. I would say that 75 percent of all the "studies" you read about in the news are pure garbage. They play with numbers and try to draw meanings from their biases and hypothesises.
