So, it looks as if we'll have to make gifts this year, due to financial constraints. I would love to hear your suggestions on what we can give, considering the following limitations:

* We're not very crafty, so we might have to limit ourselves to food gifts.
* We have a diabetic in the family, so high-sugar items aren't a great idea.
* Most of the recipients on our list don't drink, so booze doesn't really work.
* The recipients on our list live in the desert, and bread doesn't keep for longer than a day or two.

Thanks all!

You can make pot holders (basic sewing) or appliance covers (might be a little more to it but it's basic essentially and you can be fun and creative) or fleece blankets (just buy the fabric and sew, can be creative here also).

I've heard of diabetics substituting regular sugar for splenda. You might want to check into that because they sell splenda for baking. I've tasted some desserts made with splenda. It seemed pretty good.

Like the first poster said, you've ruled out a lot. However since you siad "one is a diabetic and some don't drink" therefore, there must be others who aren't and do.

Make fudge or cookies for those who can have it. Chex mix is a great idea for a diabetic (spicy mixed nuts also are easy to make). get a nice bottle of wine for people who would enjoy it. Don't try to make only one one-size-fits-all gift.

You can also find recipes for "mix in a bag" items, like how to make your own versions of instant soups or hot chocolate. You spoon the dry ingredients in a decortaive bag in layers and top with a bow and recipe.

Well you have pretty much ruled out almost everything.. because you don't want to make anything other than food and it can't be sweets. You can make homemade chex mix or trail mix.. and put it in celophane Christmas baggies and wrap those. Chex Mix will keep a long time, especially in hot weather.
