am putting on a Black History Program and we are doing about about 10 individual skits throughout black history. At the end of the program i want all the kids to come out and sing a song relevant to the skits (sort of). Not just something based on 1 person like Dr. King or Harriet Tubman. If not that a song of black pride (not James Brown), recognition or coming up or a simple, generic inspirational song. The program is for a church and we ae working with youth from 8-21.

There is no white history month because no one has got off their do nothings to establish one... everything we want has to be started so instead of complaing why don't you start working...

ok people witht the program it takes us back in time all the way to the future outlining the things that blacks have accomplished like Douglass, Sojourner, Lena Horne Dr. King and some not so famous blacks. When we have finished the last skit we want everyone to come out and sing a song and to end things on a good note. Also its at a church and there will be a lot of older people and if you have ever dealt with older black people who have lived through the civil rights movement they take it very serious and James Brown just doesn't seem appropiate.

Wade in the Water - This song has clues to the underground railroad route, so it has a lot of history to it. You should be able to research the internet and find more info about it, and other songs as well.

Well it will be kinda off topic but at the same time it would thank the roots of the African-American woman which lead to males/females alike is something I also always wanted to use in a church session as a enthusiastic thanks, sorry if it's not of any help.Dear Mama by Tupac Feat. Anthony Hamilton

What's wrong with "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud" from the Godfather of Soul James Brown?
I think it's a good song and I'm white.

how about:
Shaft-Isaac Hayes
Superfly-Curtis Mayfield

Common, go look up his songs. He has some really good songs that will fit into your assembly. might work for you, if not then look up some old school songs. They had some nice universal songs back then. Marvin Gaye might be a good one.

How about Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio?

or maybe Gin and Juice by Snoop Doggy Dog?

or the best "First of the Month" by Bone, Thugs and Harmony

All of them are fairly representative of black culture in america.
