You have to buy the first World of Warcraft before you can play Burning Crusade.
Step 1: Buy World of Warcraft and install it.
Step 2: Buy Burning Crusade and install it.
Step 2 is optional of course. You have to do step 1 before you can do step 2.

you need to buy one of the games to play because you need a code from the box. Also are you talking about online play or the regular wow? If online play then the only reason you would get the newer ones is because on those you can get up more levels. So at first i would recommend buying the older version. If regular wow then it doesnt matter...newer versions have newer things.

You'll at the very least need the core game, World Of Warcraft. Then if you choose to play the game for an extended period of time or want access to the additional perks of the expansions (bonus classes, races, and crafting skils and such) then pick up The Burning Crusades and the new expansion at a later date.
