Hello,
I have to setup a wireless network to connect to the office, but a few people have told me that they have issues when using software over VPN that creates socket connections. Has anyone who uses VPN over a router experienced issues with software applications ??

When VPN is enabled on a home PC that is connected to a wireless router, are there 2 IPs for that PC? And how can this be changed ?

Thank you!!

Well, the fact is that the SPEED of the VPN connection is the issue. Not the VPN itself. Some applications (like QuickBooks) require 10mbs to work correctly, well you aren't going to get that over a VPN since it will be limited to the available bandwidth of the internet line (very few -- read that none are 10mbs up and down -- not even T1's or T3's) so VPN's can suffer. This particularly hits socket type programs connected to a remote data source etc.

If you need an app like that, run remote desktop! That lets the app run locally with the 10/100 of the local machine on the other end of your connection! All you do is see the Desktop of the machine actually running that application and the internet speed is no longer an issue!

Use the VPN for file shares, updating, remote printing, etc and run data connects (sockets) using remote desktop the issue will not exist! Some data connect apps will work just fine some won't all depends on the speed needed!

Yes with ALL VPN's there will be TWO IP's one for your local/internet connection and one for the VPN, that is how it works!!! So don't worry about two IP's (why would it matter?)

Hope that helps, Merry Christmas and God Bless

I have seen issues with VPN and certain types of internet connections, namely DSL connections.

Are all users having the same issue? If so, then something is not setup correctly in your VPN/Firewall.

If its a few users, ask them what type of internet connection they have. They may have issues with the MTU size of the packets.
