Though I often come across a great many most wonderful people I've found rather a lot recently that people don't seem to be as kind to each other, here's a few examples.

1. I held the door open for a lady and her child in a pram, she did not say thank you and let it slam in my face.

2. I stopped a gentleman whom had dropped money from his wallet he picked it up then just gave me a horrible dirty look and kept walking.

3. Whilst doing my shopping earlier this week I asked a member of staff if they would get me an item which I was unable to reach, they merely said "I'm busy" and walked away in the opposite direction, not very helpful at all!

I know I probably sound like some rambling old man but it's something that I've been finding a lot of recently I can recall what it was like many years ago that age seems to be gone now, but I'm very grateful for your answers.

I'm 76 years old and wishing you all the best,
You take good care, Alfred

Yes Alfred, I agree! And it's got nothing to do with your age!

I've had some experiences that are very similar to yours. I don't know what it is, maybe people are too busy these days and just think about what they need to do and get for themselves and their own - NOT a very good excuse is it?!
I recently had a really bad day and when someone didn't say excuse me, to get my attention and then didn't say thank you for helping them out; this was after a person called on me by saying Oy! and another whistled at me like I was a dog to get my attention; I pointed out that being a bit politer might have been a bit more welcome than the way she spoke to me! I was then subjected to a rant by that person, that what I did as an occupation did not warrant that kind of respect, and was told I was nothing special!!!!!!!!!! It was exactly the opposite of what I was trying to get through to them, i.e. I'm not special, but I'm still bloo*y human! I think they were wasted words in the end!
Anyway, I'LL stop ranting now!!

There are still some of us who do say thank you and help when asked. Would you believe it, but I sometimes offer help when someone doesn't ask!!!! I must be crazy! : )
I hope you have better experiences from now on Alfred! : )

Yes. Primarily because most of their parents don't teach them any. I sympathise with the contributor who gets no thanks for holding open doors, particularly bad in that respect are the older people who should know better. If I see it happening, I always tell them that they are the ones complaining about the younger generation. Unfortunately, the biggest down turn is in lack of consideration for others. Today, I saw a woman in a 4x4 parking in a disabled spot although she was patently not disabled, just couldn't park her monster in an ordinary spot and another woman parking in a parent and child spot, even though she didn't have a child with her. What would have been her reaction if someone else had done that when she had her child with her?

I think that they just are not being taught any more! I am trying my best to teach my children, and my 2 year old is very good with them. She even says 'thank you mummy' at 3 o'clock in the morning if she has woken up and needed my help for the potty or something.
I think they are important, and show your respect. It is a shame that some people do not.

you're so right! It seemed like the only time people were courteous is right after 9/11. Within a few months, they were back to being rude on the roads, ignorant in the supermarket, pushing, butting in line, etc. People are just rude these days unfortunately. What's this world coming to?

The individuals who scorn your offers of help are sad people, who have translated life into their own 'hate campaign!'
You know what you're doing is right and courteous, so keep up the good work, and have a Happy Christmas, Alfred!

Yes I agree. It's a sign of the times we live. I am 62 years young and if I had done any of the things that current young people do, My butt would be burning until I did it right. They have little to no respect for authority. Little parental supervision.

It sounds like you need to move to Tennessee. We have some of the nicest people in the country. You get looked down upon if you're not nice and polite here. Although, I did find a lot of nice and kind people when I visited Philadelphia; believe it or not. I was shocked. I couldn't believe it at the time.

Yeah, peoples manners have gone down hill.. I have experienced the retail store scenario and opening the door for someone when they are leaving and i am entering, they don't even say thank you, maybe if I just acted like an uneducated prick maybe I'll get some respect in this city

It certainly isn't the norm but I have always found there are a few people for whatever reason forget their manners. I always remind them in a pleasant way and just smile. Hopefully, it will sink in somewhere down the road if enough people remind them.

I know what you mean Alfred, it is annoying and disrespectful. I always find a nice smile gets results when I ask favours or receive favours. Usually I ask someone taller than me if I can't reach something and they oblige with a smile.
