Did you know.......

.....that the Civil Rights act of 1964 was authored by President Eisenhower, a conservative Republican, and when it was submitted to Congress it was strongly opposed by most Democrat Congressmen.

.......that the Voting Rights act of 1959 was authored by President Eisenhower, a conservative Republican, and when it was submitted to Congress it was strongly opposed by most Democrat Congressmen.

..... that ever since those bills passed the Democrats have been claiming credit for them, even though they neither authored the bills, and most of them originally opposed their passage.

Quite true, it was southern Democrats who filibustered the legislation. Northern Democrats are the ones who pushed hard and eventually found a strong southern ally with the election of LBJ in '64'. The fact remains that those same southern Democrats have now found comfort in the Republican party. Eisenhower had a dismal record on civil rights considering he won two terms. If you're looking to claim credit for conservative Republicans just look at the geographical "red states" and tell me what percentage of support do you receive from minority voters in those regions? Your question is so typical of SOME minority "red state" REDNECKS!!!

Democrats have been some of the most "socially" conservative people that there are. Most of the Southern states in the United States (yes, the ones with the KKK and other such mindsets) voted almost entirely Democratic until the mid 1960s to early 1970. It has been only in the last few decades that Democrats have actually been trying to help the minorities that they now claim as their strongholds (African Americans, women, etc.) Most people dont realize that when race and voting rights were the issue 40-50 years ago, it was the Democrats who hated them.

Yes. I did. Did YOU know that most of the Democrats who opposed the CRA and the VRA were known as "Dixiecrats," Democrats from places like Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina, who would now be Republicans? People like Zell Miller. A democrat who spent his whole speech attacking John Kerry at the 2004 RNC. When Lyndon Johnson signed the act, he is said to have turned to an aide and said "[The Democratic Party] has just lost the south for a generation."

George Wallace was the Democratic Governor who stood in the doorway to personally prevent young black school children from attending white schools. He later ran for president. Lester Maddox was another Democrat. Al Gore's Dad was a Democratic Senator and a staunch segragationist. Without the help of Northern Republicans no civil rights legislation would have ever been passed.

Democrats do not let something as trivial as "facts" get in their way.
