"As the film was being released, it was condemned by the government of the People's Republic of China who claimed that Communist Chinese military officers were intentionally shown as impolite and arrogant, brutalizing the local people. The Dalai Lama, regarded as a traitor and an imperialist tool by the PRC government, was portrayed positively in the film and so it was banned from being shown in China.

"As a result, the director and the starring actors Brad Pitt and David Thewlis were banned from ever entering the Chinese mainland."

In short, because it got the Chinese government's knickers in a twist, similar to Iranian officials' reactions when 300 was released.

China is very touchy about Tibet. The Chinese people are told that China saved Tibet from a slave, hunter gatherer culture and that the Tibetans are very grateful for China's rule. It's not the story most people hear outside China.

China may not be able to stop the propaganda machine breaking down via the internet and imported DVDs, but they sure as heck can stop Brad Pitt from coming in to discourage Hollywood types from making more movies about the situation in Tibet.

Either that or he failed his medical!

I think her supported the campaign for a free Tibet, which China didn't take kindly too.

China hates Tibet. They hate the Dali Lama and they now hold it against us because he came here and spoke and we won't hate him like they do. He's a awesome man.

It would not hurt my feelings at all to not be allowed into China.

Haven't seen the movie but China is very strict on what goes out about them. I think Richard Geier had a problem with them also after a movie he did.
