Santana: #2 active WHIP and won-lost % (behind a fading Pedro), top adjusted ERA 2004-6 and 9th in 2007, most strikeouts 2--4-6 and #2 last year,
6th in active Black Ink behind pitchers with far more years...

Santana has 37 Black Ink points for leading the league in significant categories.
Peavy has 20.
Sabathia has 9.
Beckett has 4.
The three of them together don't total Santana's score.

The most dominating season ever by any pitcher: Bob Gibson 1968. 22 W 9 L, 1.12 E.R.A, 13 Shutouts, and a span of 97 innings in which he allowed only two runs and one of them was scored because of a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the first inning of a complete game. That game was one of the 28 that he completed that year. Plus no steroids, pure greatness.

There are several elite pitchers in MLB at this time any of which could be the best next season. However, I believe the most consistent and dependable of the elite few is Johan Santana.

That depends on what matters most. If winning World Series titles then Beckett, but if that doesn't matter then it could be Santana, Webb, Holiday.

This is a lot like the Manning vs. Brady question in football. I'll always take a guy that performs in the post season over a seasonal star!

Santana. Wang is 2nd, in my book. I'm a Yankees fan, so I'm prejudice. I'd sooner have Wang then Beckett, though I think he is certainly worth his salt.

Don't compare NL and AL. NL pitchers don't have to pitch to the best hitters in baseball on a regular basis. It's called "different leagues" for a reason.
