I have been getting a lot of negative emails about this film, how it promotes atheism. The emails give these quotes: "If there is a God, and he is as the Christians describe him, then he deserves to be put down and rebelled against." Here's another: "My books are about killing God." Does anyone have more information?

First I would like to thank those of you for responding. Second, I would like to say that I am a lover of different points of view. That being said, if I truly don't agree with the message of the book I do not want to support it by giving the author my money.

BTW- I felt the same about Eminem and have boycotted all products/shows/music. There are some points of views not worth hearing for they do not make the world a better place.

The plot is easy enough to explain however the real problem lies more with the series itself not just the first book. The author has made his personal feelings about God and Christianity abundantly clear, his agenda is as he has stated to "kill" God in the minds of children.

Now for me this series is not as big of an an issue on the religious level simply because it did not shake my personal faith at all, however someone who is not old enough to be philosophically grounded in his faith (like the kids this series targets) might struggle with some of the concepts. Not to mention the fact that this fictional world is "saved" by an sexual act by two children which is beyond inappropriate for a series marketed for kids.

While as a Christian I do find the picture he paints of the Church offensive, its hard to be truly insulted because the god he tries to depict has nothing to do with my God they are not even remotely similiar. So for me its not so much the anti religous themes because to me his depiction is wholly inacurate in all the ways that matter.
My primary issue with this series is the fact that it is aimed at a child audience and the movie will no doubt be a watered down version of the book which will make parents think that the series is like that and buy them the books not realizing the mature content of the series.

Bottom line the series is a very obvious platform for the authors personal beliefs which is not an issue for me because every author has that right but I do have a very serious problem the sensual content in these books marketed to children not to mention the obvious attempt to indoctrinate children with his atheistic beliefs.

I havent finished reading the trilogy yet but i will say there are some controversial religious overtones to the books. I think some of the points made me unconfortable but i think that the role of literature is to expose you to alternative view points; some of which may be ones you disagree with and dont like. I would read the books, and if you find them to be against what you beleive regect the religious points they are making. whether you agree with thier point of view or not they are still well written provacative books which in my opinion makes them worth reading.

you should read the books and decide for yourself how you feel about these books.

The golden compass is the first in a trilogy which ultimately leads to a war against god. The main character, lyra, is the second "Eve" and follows her story.

In the golden compass, lyra is first introduced to a special elementary particle called "Dust". she later goes in search of what it is while she is looking for a kidnapped friend and trying to help her uncle, who has been arrested and sent into exile in the far north of Svalbard where the armored bears live.

imo the books aren't really about killing god (but of course, everyone is free to interpret things the way they wish...like poetry) it's about how a religious authority shouldn't be the main power and influence in the world and how one should stay true to oneself.

I would not believe the emails as they sound like folks who are trying to control what you read, what you watch, and what you think.
