i would hate this to happen but i thought about this. when a place gets to big and powerful they tend to lose control over themselves. think about if because its so big and powerful, power is given to states as states get powerful they stop worry about rest of country and about themselves so they grow apart and could become separat. would could or will this happen to united states

Technically no. Our Constitution doesn't allow succession from the Union. I have studied this in my federalism classes.. Actually the states are losing some sovereignty, with the help of the Supreme Court. You can read Robert Nagel's book (Federalism and Intergovernmental relations) about the matter.

That's the thing about our system of federalism, it allows states to experiment with various solutions to their problems without affecting the rest of the country.

The only way I see something like what you're proposing is if some extremely divisive issue manifests itself. I'm not sure what issue that may be, but I really doubt that we'll ever separate. We may lose world credibility, economic and military power, but I can't see this country separating.

Of course it could and most likely will eventually.
It's what empires do. Rise and fall.
Some do it quickly, others take thousands of years.
Have you forgotten the civil war already?
That was a close one.

How about the native Americans' empire?
They were nations and look at them now!
Of course, they were conquered by outside forces
rather than degradation from within, but the outcome is much the same.

Fortunately our government realizes this and throws a war every so often
to help boost economic and moral values.
As long as we have a common enemy we have a reason to stick together.

Anything CAN happen.
Given the federal nature of US government, it's possible for a state to declare itself independant. But it's really unlikely given how inter-dependant the states are (except possibly Hawaii and Alaska)

not only could we.. we will! it's only a matter of time. i doubt it will be in our lifetimes, but anything can happen. look at Germany, soviet union, the entire middle east. of course, China has been around for millenia and seems to be doing ok.

The US will either break up into smaller nations or we will become part of a more global nation (North Americanaland)

We fought a civil war to prevent states from leaving the Union once. Would we do it again?

Sure could. Study some Roman history and then ask yourself if you see any similarities.
