YES THE WORLD (Earth) WILL END!............ in about 4 billion years when the Sun expands into a Red Giant and engulfs the Earth------------------- I would not worry about it happening ANY time soon! Ha.
and I hope you are NOT in the habit of relying on the predictions of a DEAD civilization!

I am absolutely sure the world will not end on 12/21/12. Well, there is a statistical chance, but theres a statistical chance the statue of David in Florence will walk off his pedistal and perform a jig. Of course the odds of that happening are such that it wouldn't happen in the lifetime of a trillion universes, but hey, theres a chance.
There's a rather larger ( but still very small for any particular year ) statistical possibility of the Earth getting hit by an asteroid or meteor. If it does, the damage can range from local to world wide and if its large enough the oceans could boil away and you wouldn't be hearing any more talk about the possibility of meteors hitting. Or Jesus returning, Or anything else for that matter. Lots of things CAN happen. But they probably wont.
Given time the world will end. In a hundred million years or so the sun will have brightened sufficiently that the average temperature of the earth will increase (concurrent with chemical changes that will steadily decrease the amount of atmospheric oxygen) that the only life on earth will be bacteria in the sea. Over the following several hundred million years the world will continue to heat up, and in a billion years or so the oceans should have evaporated. All life will be dead by this point in time. Three billion years or so after that the sun will enter its red giant stage. There is some question whether the earth will be engulfed immediately or not, but there is a good chance the moon will be crashing into the earth. In the final stages of the suns red giant stage, if the earth still existed, it would likely quickly cease existing.
There is a statistical chance that Earth might not be destroyed. In several billion years the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way are likely to collide. While stars themselves seldom collide, gravitational stresses by passing stars can cause orbital disruptions, flinging worlds out of their orbits. Then instead of being swallowed by a dying sun, the earth could become a frozen dead rogue which would have no sign that we ever existed.
I would suggest you read a wonderful book entitled "Life and Death of Planet Earth"
And excuse me for cutting and pasting a section from a post I did 20 minutes ago. I didn't feel like typing that again.

The world will end, but not in 5 years. Think about it - we'd have already seen the impactor if it's only 5 years out.
The world will end when the sun runs out of fuel, and becomes a red giant. In about 5 billion years, this will happen. The sun will expand, and swallow Mercury, Venus, then the Earth. Mars will probably be 'safe', but it will be scorched & as dead as it is today.

Why are you sure it will? It's the fifth date I've seen published for the suposed end of the world since December 31st 1999, and none of the reasons anyone has given for the world actually ending are based on anything even remotely resembling science.
In any case, what difference will it make if the world does end? There's sod all I can do about it, so I might as well carry on living my life as normal.

We won't be "for sure"until 12/22/12.By the same token, you won't know"for sure"that today the world won't end today..until tomorrow. It's a date on a stone calendar by a peoples who went extinct hundreds of years ago.THEY didn't survive,I wouldn't put so much stock in their calender.Nothing any more scientific about that date than next Thursday

According to the Myan calender I believe it's close to that date. But I wouldn't worry about it too much, because people have been predicting the end of world forever and they have all been wrong lol

The way you ask the question is not scientific. If you make a claim, you need to substantiate it. The burden of proof is on you. The way you ask it, people would just say, come back with the same question in 5 years:-)
