You should be conscious of your emotions and not let them overcome you. Be aware of the situations in which your emotions can 'let you down', and try and make an effort to control your emotions at that time. Controlling emotions, especially for females (no offense), takes a lot of willpower to both control emotions AND not make it look obvious that you are controlling your emotions.
For example, let's say you lose control if someone calls you ugly. Next time someone says that, make a mental note not to react the way you usually do and strictly abide by it. You will be surprised how far you can go.
It all worked for me.

The best way to understand your emotions is to become born-again, and to give your life to Jesus Christ. This is not a joke. Also, you must make a daily habit of reading the Bible, God's Word. Any Christian church will give you one for free. Before I was a Christian, I was very mixed-up as a result of my upbringing, my immaturity, and this fallen world. But after I became a Christian, and began to make a habit of reading God's Word, my thinking and emotions became more balanced though the world around me may fall apart. Our emotions and our thoughts are gifts from God, and are not meant to be out-of-control or at the mercy of every passing situation. When Jesus Christ forgave my sins, and came into my life, my own strange ideas and confusions and childishnesses began to stop. What a change for the better from the rebellious life I was leading. This is the best to live a more balanced, aware kind of life in this passing world.

Meditation is a great way to control your emotions. Also expressing your emotions on paper is another way to control them.

They have and I have learned to conquer them by seriously weighing good sense against fanciful ideas.
Emotions or feelings are under our control. We simply allow ourselves to go crazy over this or that, when we are supposed to think logically to avoid pitfalls and pain in the end or along the way.
Remember, you are in control. Do what seems right not the 'hit and miss' thing.

if you like harry potter movies, you might remember professor snape talking about : "control your emotions, discipline your mind"
i think that it's all in our mind. if you set your mind not to be angry, you won't. however, it's quite hard not to cry even though you set you mind not to do so, right? i think this is the part where friends play an important role
