(tan x + cot y) / (tan x cot y)
= [tan x / (tan x cot y)] + [cot y / (tan x cot y)]
= (1 / cot y) + (1 / tan x)
= tan y + cot x

cot x = 1 / tan x

tan X + cot Y
------------------
tan X cot Y

Separate it into two fractions:
......tan X ......... cot Y
----------------+ ----------------
tan X cot Y ... tan X cot Y

Cancel terms:
...1 ........1
------- + --------
cot Y ... tan X

Replace cot with 1/tan and vice versa:
tan Y + cot X
