Okay, I'll help....but I have one question: why the heck aren't you just reading the book and doing the work?

But since you asked, here are your answers (lazy bones!):

1.) Manifest Destiny. While it wasn't the actual term for the expansion - there WAS no real terminology for this, you see - it was the philosophy that justified it all. "It's our destiny to go West" pretty much sums it up.

2.) Laissez-Faire. The term, as well as the idea, were first put forth in the mid-19th Century...amost 80 years before the Progressive Era began.

3.) John McKinley. ***William McKinley*** was a US President, while John McKinley was a U.S. Senator and Supreme Court Justice.

4.) Lincoln Steffens, Ida Tarbell, David Graham Phillips, Ray Stannard Baker, Samuel Hopkins Adams, and ***Upton Sinclair*** all were famous muckrakers.

5.) Sharecropping. As slavery had been outlawed, yet the farms and plantations still needed to be worked, sharecropping became the method of choice, where the former slaves were partially compensated for working a portion of the land and sharing the crops (hence "share cropping") with the plantation or farm's owner.

6.) All of the above.

next time, do the homework, okay?

Question 5 is a strange one because all these presidents served during what is generally considered the Progressive Era (1890s-1920). My Encarta encyclopedia lists Progressive reforms starting in 1903. That would eliminate McKinley. Also McKinley’s first name is William, not John, so could that be a trick question?
