Is that when they yell out "Blue 42" and stuff like that? How does everyone know what that means?? I mean I'm sure it's not automatically embedded in everyone's minds?? Basically what is involved in calling a play?

It's called check-offs and audibles. Blue 42 may stand for one play, and Green 17 may stand for another. For check-offs, the quarterback will call two plays in the huddle. When he goes up to the line of scrimmage, he will look at the defensive formation, and based on what he sees, he will choose the play that has the best chance for success. If that play happens to be whatever Blue 42 stands for, then everyone will know what their assignments are for that play, and they execute.

For audibles, these are preset plays before the game that are gone over during the practice week. If a play is called that has little success against the lines up defensive formation, then the quarterback will call an audible to change the play to a more successful one.

The Playbook.. Every team has a playbook that the players must memorize or atleast know the specific ideas of it. It also could mean and 'Audible' which is a shift of players when the QB thinks it neccesary.. The defense's formation plays a big role in it...

Hope this helped!

Well, a lot of it actually is imbedded. These guys spend a lot of time learning the different plays and calls.

You're asking me? You're a guy, you're supposed to automatically know this stuff. I thought they took all the boys aside in like 2nd grade and explained it. My son knows all that crap and we don't watch football in our house.
