They found some abnormalities on the ultrasound, that could mean my baby has Down or Edwards syndrome. So I had my blood drawn for AFP screening and it turned out great, 1:10 000. BUT, that might be because I am young (25) and the test was done at almost 20 weeks, while it is most accurate when done between 15 - 18 wks. So I am wondering if my baby is really healthy or there is still a chance he has one of those syndromes? I refused amnio as I would keep the baby no matter what and I don't want to loose my hope.

They found choroid plexus cysts and kidneys dilatation.

I refused the blood test at first, too, but after they told me about the chance my baby might have DS or ES, I decided to do the blood test. Just to be more prepared for what might come.

How likely it is that there would still be a problem depends on what the findings were by ultrasound.

If they found a choroid plexus cyst - it is most likely a normal variant.

If they found a congenital heart defect - the baby has a medical issue that will need treatment regardless of whether the baby has one of those syndromes.

Was there a genetic counselor involved with your care who can answer these questions specific to your situation?

EDIT: Both of the findings you mention on ultrasound (chroid plexus cysts and dilated kidneys) are very common findings in healthy pregnancies. Of course, the only way to rule out Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome is, as you already know, amniocentesis. However, the most likely thing given a normal AFP screen and otherwise normal ultrasound is that the baby is healthy.

I had the testing done with my son. I did not have an amnio. I had three ultrasounds done....and my son was born severely disabled. Only half of his brain formed. Nothing was every caught....At first it was hard to handle....but now that he has passed away (he lived to be 2) I wouldn't change one second for anything. I'm having my second now and I don't care if there is anything wrong with my child. I would like a heads-up. I'm going for a level two ultrasound just before Christmas. The only sure way to know is an amnio....but there is a risk of miscarriage with that. No matter what your child will be a blessing.

But i didnt want and amnio done either to much rick and we are keeping the baby anyway. We will pray for you as we do ourselves. just hope for the best. but God Bless you for saying its not a option your still keeping your child it shows your a real mother and will make a great one.

these things are rare, especially since you are so young. and they do get false positives (when something looks abnormal, but everything is fine). You should talk to the genetic counselor for just in case, but i think that you, and your baby, will be okay. and if there is a problem, there are many things today that can be done to help your baby after it is born. No worries, you can still be happy and enjoy being pregnant and really enjoy when your beautiful baby comes to join you!

your hope is the last thing you want to loose. It is very brave for you to accept what ever comes your way. I had a friend that had a positive AFP test and had a healthy normal girl. Nothing is for certain. Even machines make mistakes.

Quad and tripple test screenings always have false positives. Always. Ive only known ONE person to get a negative.

I wouldnt even have them done. I didnt for my pregnancy.

My friend had one done on her first and second. Both were positive, and the second baby even with the blood test done confirmed it was DS.

He was perfectly and utterly healthy.

Dont stress it, honestly, they shouldnt do those tests unless you're over 30 with a family history of those issues.

I just came across your question. I don't have an answer for you but I wanted to let you know that you are in my prayers.
