Just because we can't see air doesn't mean we don't need it

I have to ask first, to you have access to all of the any and all evidence humankind may have to offer to support your statement that "there is no proof that any god exists"?

If you have access to all the proof that human kind has compiled against the existance of god, how do you know that the foundation of that proof is accurate? How do you know that the tests performed and the methods for acquiring the data are accurate, and the only methods that will ever be available?

How do you define proof? If god were to come into your bedroom tonight would that provide proof of to the contrary. Because then you might believe that there is proof that there is a God though there is no scientific evidence. Does reality support belief or does belief support reality? Does something exist because you believe it does or do you believe something exists because that is truly reality?

If you were rowing down the river in your canoe and the right rear wheel fell off, how many pancakes, (scientifically) should you throw in a doghouse?

That really depends on what you mean as proof. There is no proof either way on any religion vs science really. It's all a matter of perspective. I am not big on Christianity, I have my own beliefs that encompass quite a few global beleifs, but one thing has always intregued me about life. The scientific term is the "Golden Ratio", there's a huge amount of documentation on it. It's a mathmatical equation that applies to pretty much everything. It has been around since the beginning of time, in fact it pretty much is the equation of nature itself.

The bottom line is this. It is the arc found in nature, the most evident place to find it is a seashell. It is the curve of the arc on naturally forming shapes. It can also be found in the arc that will form if you drop a handful of sand onto the ground. Actually any material, any size, it will always have the same curve. Lately there have been British studies using this ratin equated to beauty. The top supermodels and people we find to be beautiful all have this ratio from eye to ear, ear to lips, that sort. The most beautiful faces of the world, even historically have been composed of this mysteripus ratio. The pyramids have been build using it, ancient Greek structures use it. It is everywhere we find beauty.

So either the planet is an absolutely perfect system, or maybe there is some truth to it being designed.

If you're prepared to define your standard of proof beforehand, and indeed the limit parameters on the term "god" you might have a better chance of a definitive reply.

Mathematical proofs *for* God's existence have been tried and they largely fall down on their assumptions. Similarly for logical proofs of god's non-existence.

God, or merely a highly advanced being doing psychological research, *could* have created the universe a moment ago, complete with its apparent billions of years of age, and all your perceptions and memories up to this moment.
(Just to test this virtual creature's reaction? Or to test billions of us, interacting? The "computer simulation" argument is not trivial))

The god of the deists is (almost?) impossible to rule in or out, since beyond creating the universe some billions of years years ago no interaction has taken place which might be used as a basis for judgement.
"The universe as a quantum fluctuation" may not require a deist's god.as "first cause" but does not definitively rule one out.

Or are we talking about "beyond reasonable doubt" or "on the balance of probabilities" (different court standards) as the basis, and a god allegedly more present and active than that of the deists?

There, well, I'm an ex-Christian atheist.
If evolution, then the evidence is firmly against a powerful *loving* deity.
The process is too contingent, wasteful and, if god exists, cruel.
Darwin saw it so:
“I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent and omnipotent God would have designedly created the Ichneumonidae [parasitic wasps] with the express intention of their feeding within the living bodies of caterpillars”.
And much more can be filed to that account.
Why do human females have such a difficult, painful and potentially fatal labour?
Even the bible has to refer to this as deliberate curse.
(Genesis 3:16). If God-guided evolution, it was deliberately evolved *in*. It's not necessary.
That eats into a "beneficent and omnipotent" deity, too.

If there is no God, why would we need proof that he/she doesn't exist? Isn't it a paradox to state that something doesn't exist yet still seek proof that it does?

And is it fair to seek to disprove a persons' belief just because someone doesn't agree with it? All of this just proves a great discussion can be had without any answers being found.

Very strong observation. I suppose you HAVE proof He DOESN'T exist to make such a bold statement or did you pull that right out of the empty space between your ears? There is ample proof that a HIGHER BEING does exist. Every culture believes in that. We call Him GOD others call him Buddha, some call him Mohammad and still others refer to Him as the God of Light etc. Just stop to figure out how YOU were put together in your mother's womb. How could you go without breathing air for nine months and then suddenly pop into this world and begin breathing immediately and manage to begin a life all on your own. I suppose a scientist worked day and night inside your mother's womb giving you artificial respiration? No, one must believe that a Higher Being built our mothers to be the perfect human making factory in every way. It is the only body capable of taking a single cell and molding it into a human being. Men can not do it. Only a woman can. That's proof enough for me.

I suggest reading the old testament for proof that god does not exist. if you are not convinced, consider a god that would wipe out all living animal forms except the occupants of Noah's ark as a form of revenge. Then turn to Joshua, who is responsible for the slaughter of some 87,000 men, women and children. Amen

You cannot, for proving or disproving the existence of a higher being would have to be done empirically, that is using your senses. Should you consider something extraordinary a miracle of immense proportions, it may prove the existence of a higher being to you, yet it is you that chooses whether to accept or deny it. In any case, if such a thing never occurs in your lifetime, then again you may accept or deny the result of a lifelong experiment, that of proving or disproving the existence of a higher being.

There's actually a lot of evidence that points to the existence of God.

Suggested reading- "The Case for a Creator" by Lee Strobel

I'm almost done with it, and I've learned a lot about what's going on in many of the scientific communities, and how this new information we're finding points away from all the naturalistic explanations and toward someone/something that caused it all to happen, and put it all together.

funny thing about the whoel god debate is that there is no proof that god exists, but by the same token there is no proof that he does not exist. there was no proof that there was another panet in our solar system and then one day scientists discovered that there is another planet past pluto. so really it comes down to what you want to believe and what you want to hold on to. both my parents are religious freaks, and i still have my doubts. while i may find that there is no solid evidence that a particualr god exists, i sleep better at night knowing that maybe (quite possibly) there is something out there that is bigger than us all that watches over and ultimatly decides the outcome of our lives. it kinda relievesthe burden of day to day stresses for me. hope that point of view helps, i know it drives my parents nuts though! hahaha! religion is personal, if it wasn't it wouldn't have meaning. each to their own!

For those who believe, there is no need for proof. Believing in God is a matter of faith. You can not see the wind, but you know that it exists. The same goes for God. This world is too great and complex to have 'just happened' without a Creator. There is certainly no proof that God does not exist.
