I would like to redo my kitchen cabinets. Right now they are wood and have those little grooves in the middle of the door. They are older style cabinets. I either want to paint white or restain. Which do you think would be better?

Also, how would I go about doing this? I would like to know the steps I need to take in getting this done. I know you will have to sand the cabinets down but not sure after you get the other on there.

I did this several years ago to a home I owned. It had original cabinets that were built in, so removing them would have been a pain. I took the doors off and removed the handles and hinges. Then I sanded them down until I had nice clean wood. I stained them a nice cherry red color and sealed them with water based polyurethane (water based will not yellow and is very hard when dry), then I sanded the cabinet frames down to remove just the laquer. I then filled all imperfections with putty and re-sanded. When done I painted the frames a gloss black and then also sealed them with water based poly to protect from dings and scratches.

The look was awesome with the black trim and red stained doors. Everyone loved it. Buy some new hardware that matches your existing holes and enjoy.

While I agree with Pumkin that stained wood looks better than paint. There are several specialty paints for wood cabinets in kitchen's that look great.

Pumkin mentioned that the cabinets are probably polyurethane. While this is true if they were custom made, store bought cabinets are usually finished in lacquer.

Stripping the old finish off is a lot of hard work and very messy. You'll need to get the finish and stain out of every nook and cranny of your cabinets.

Professional furniture re-finishers dip the items to be stripped in a vat for this reason.

Before you make up your mind, check out Sherwin Williams paint store near you, They have cabinet paints in several colors that you can mix, match or customize. They look great when finished. You can even buy paint kits to simulate antique or stained wood without all the extra hard labor.

Stain or Paint? Paint is pretty permanent (though it can be stripped). Your cabinets probably have a urethane finish on them now and that has to go too.

You can sand them down and then use a primer such as Kilz and paint them. This is probably the easiest thing to do. Or you can strip the finish and stain them. If your wood is nice looking (not the finish, but the wood itself) the value will be greater if you re-stain them.

A website below gives you step by step instructions.

if you paint you meed to get adhesion to the finish thats on the cabinet which means that you have to break the finishs surface ,if you dont do this there are no garantees the paint will stick for any length of time , using kilz does help, but if you will wipe the cabinets down with deglosser first it will make the paint adhease better. one other option is dying the existing finish to a diffferent color or tint. need light colored stain for this to work, also should be done by a pro.
