My midwife hasn't even checked me over orr anything since I have found out im pregnant. All she has done is give me a leaflet and told me when I had a scan. She didn't weigh me or take my blood pressure - nothing like that? Is this wrong? This is my first pregnancy and i'm only 19 so as you can imagine I am so nervous when I get cramps and pains eveywhere (my midwife just said that all cramps are normal but I don't believ her as she was as much use as a choclate fire guard)
Please comment.

Do they check your urine for protein? Do they measure your uterus (fundal height)? Do they listen to baby's heartbeat with a doppler? That's about all they usually do at most appointments. How many weeks are you?

They should definitely be weighing you and taking your blood pressure. Ask questions of your midwife if you think you aren't getting good care. Ask why she isn't checking weight and BPs, or when she will start doing it routinely. If you still aren't happy, find another midwife or OB.

It depends on how far along you are.

A good doctor or midwife should start checking blood pressure, weight and fetal heartbeat by week 12, so if you aren't that far along that might explain why your first check-up was so brief.

She is correct that cramps throughout pregnancy are normal. What you should worry about are very painful cramps that don't go away and any bleeding or spotting you see.

If you still feel that she is not providing the level of care you would like, or is not helpful when you ask questions, then I would find another midwife.

I'd think she'd at least do a blood pressure check or something, and she should be monitoring your weight. How did you choose her to midwife for you? Always check references--as in any profession, some are better than others.

I don't want you to freak out, but I'd be looking for another midwife if I were you.

If you like to be have more thorough scientific examinations you may want to find a doctor instead. Midwives are geared toward people who prefer natural, non-invasive, type things. Doctors are all about tests and weights and measurements, Sounds like you just picked the wrong one. Its a perosnal reference thing.
