Yes I remove the cover and then replace. It gets in the way. When replacing it, however, I use the front flap as a book mark.

I take the dust jacket off, and put it on a high shelf. Don't fold it or crease it. After you finish your book, put the cover back on. Then the book looks great on the shelf, still new. Classic books that still have the dust cover are worth 3 to 4 times as much as the same book in the same condition without the cover.

I'm lucky if I have a dustcover--lol!!! No really, I'll start a book with the cover on, but eventually I put it to the side until I finish. Like another person here I hate when it gets "flappy". And like another person here I would never mark up a book so it looks lived in. That person must have missed the class trip to the library, where THAT is discouraged. I like to think of passing books on to my family and others and to give over a dog-eared, (BTW you're not supposed to fold down the corners either, but that's another question) marked up book with my comments and ideas would take away the joy of owning the book as well as reading for the next person and drawing their own conclusions of the writing.

Yes, because the dust jacket gets in the way, and also so it won't get battered and beaten up while I'm reading the book.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do. I find that if I leave the jacket on while I'm reading, it slips off and it gets bent or torn. So, I take it off when I'm reading the book and put it back on when I'm done (so it looks nice and pristine on the shelf).

Yes - not because I care about protecting the dust cover, but because it slips and flaps around when I'm trying to read.

No. I let the dust cover get destroyed or ripped. I love books but I think that they should reflect the lives they live and the condition in which they exist. Underline words, circle great ideas, write in the margins. Make the book solely yours and reflective of your relationship with it. If the dust cover is torn, so be it.
