The narrowest place is the Isthmus of Panama...

Anyone can use the canal as long as they pay a toll and can fit through the locks. The largest toll ever paid was somewhere around $250,000 or so. The smallest was like 36 cents (paid by an individual swimmer). There are talks of expansion to accomodate larger ships/more ships at a time. Large cargo carriers are unable to fit through and some cargo carriers have to wait around for days before they are able to get through the canal due to crowding.

About 2/3 of the ships that go through the canal are coming from or headed to American shores.

The isthmus of Panama at it's narrowest point is only 50KM wide . The United States and Asia use the canal the most. The canal is for world-wide use.

The canal is open to all ships that can fit into the locks, so many of the newer tankers and container ships can't fit throug the current locks... but as soon as the NEW and larger locks, then just about any ship from any country will be able to use the canal.

Isthmus of Panama.

The Panama Canal is open to all shipping as far as I know. All they have to do is pay to go through.
