Are you swaddling him? Make sure to swaddle him tightly. We have been swaddling our son to sleep at night since birth.. Where is he sleeping? Our son naps in his papasan swing during the day and then at night we have a soft co-sleeper for him that is placed in his bassinet. You can also try to turn on the blow dryer or vaccum.. babies like the white noise and it will put most of them to sleep. I purchased a CD of white noise from http://www.purewhitenoise.com and play it or I play the Baby Einstein Sea crib toy.. the lullabies put him to sleep. You may also try rocking to sleep on your shoulder and just sitting with him while he naps. He should be getting 16 hours of sleep a day.. but if he doesn't seem fussy, then he is okay.. he will sleep when he wants to sleep.

According to the chart, your son needs about 15 hours of sleep daily. Since he's only getting around 5, I do think that something is up. But I wouldn't want to start guessing what the issue could be because I could freak you out unnecessarily.
I suggest talking to his pediatrician about it. The doc could probably give you some tips or point you in a better direction for answers.

Have you tried maybe putting him in his swing or taking him for a walk in his stroller. My son is a fighter, too, but can never resist a car ride, stroller ride, or swinging. You could try to see if he is hungry. I think babies go through a growth spurt around this time so, he may just be adjusting.

He's more aware of his world and that you're there or not there. Its normal for them to wake up and be upset about it.
Either go back in and rock him back to sleep, or let him cry. Personally at 3 months I think its too soon to let them cry, but if hes just too aware of the world it might be time to, little by little, help him learn how to fall asleep on his own.

he could still be hungry, try adding a little bit pf rice to his bottle so it's heavier on his belly which will help fill him and should help him sleep longer, also if its during the day, a lot of babies are afraid of missing something so they tend to fight sleep, try putting him in a different room where its quite and he can get some sleep... if nothing else works try letting him cry himself to sleep, its hard to do but sometimes it has to be done

He knows that you aren't around, and it upsets him. Don't worry, just hold him till he falls back asleep, and if you can, put him down gently as not to wake him back up. He'll start to sleep better as he gets older!

really im not sure if this will work but my baby's pediatrician once recommended putting a blanket with your scent on it in the crib, maybe wrap him in it. he said it may make the baby feel that you are there.
