I don't know what the other guy is talking about. Actually Connection to the Internet! 5mbs is great! Its a matter if you can actually get it to run at those speeds. The normal max high now days is around 8mbs but some people can even get up to 10 or 15 mbs.
The average broadband user probably only has cheaper DSL something like 256k or 1.5 mbps
So yours is great.
The other preson was talking about network equipment. like a Wireless card should run at 54 mbps or even 100. Most Lan cards are at least a 100mbs and can even go up to a 1gb a second. But you would only get these speeds on some internal network, not through the web or Internet.

In my area, that is the typical rate for home consumers. We have "home" options to go as high as 30 Mbps, but the price is a little more than double the 5 Mbps offering.
Unless you are streaming a lot (and I mean a huge amount) of video content, 5 Mbps is a very reasonable rate for typical home usage. It will support gaming, video, audio, work from home (VPN), and general web viewing.

It's not that bad.
If you are talking about your broadband speed and not your Network Interface Speed.
There are a number of places you can check both your uplink spead and your downlink speed.
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ is one of them.
My speed is around 4.7mbps
Most network cards are 10/100/1000 mbps these days.
Lots of wireless cards are 54 and higher.
Good luck.

5mbps for an internet link is perfectly fine for most purposes (but more is almost always good). Steven B's numbers are LAN speeds (54mbps is the nominal speed for 802.11g wireless and 10mbps is the basic ethernet, not fast ethernet, LAN connection)

not really. 54mbs would be decent. anything under 10 is unbearably slow.

this should be good enough for normal usage, unless you have special usage, eg web hosting.
