It's totally up to personal preference and what you want out of the game. Are you playing on a PvP server or PvE? Do you like playing solo or in a group? If in a group than what role do you want--DPS, healer, tank? Are you just starting out or have you been playing for awhile? And on and on, so many different factors go into it. But I think the most important thing to consider is which class you'll have the best time playing:)
My favorites: hunters and shamans.
www.wowwiki.com has great info on all classes and what situations they work best in:)

There is no best class; it's based on your own opinion and play style. Some classes seem better than others because they're backed by a hardcore player with great gear. However, for a casual player, go with what you want and enjoy.
Some classes are well suited to certain races because of racial bonuses. For instances, orcs make great hunters and warlocks because of the damage bonus put out by pets and demons. When deciding what race you want, first determine a class and a faction; then look at the racial bonuses of each race and determine which one is better suited to your class.

I like druids. Jack of all trades and if you play your talent points right you can be a really good tank, damage dealer, or healer. I have a level 56 Druid who is mainly balance spec, but also has some points in restoration and feral so I can heal and prowl/be an off tank.

Kinda Sort of.
I've mostly played alliance so someone who is big into horde can add to this. This is all in my opinion:
Rogues
more partial to trolls and night elves. NE's with dodge increase, and trolls with berserker. Gnomes are handy to with esape artist.
Warriors
Humans with sword skill and trolls with berserker.
Warlocks/Mages
Gnomes for intell buff
Priests
Dwarves for fearward, and humans for spirit increase
Hunters
Dwarves for gun bonus, and taurens war stomp is handy for interupting spellcasting in close range pvp.
Paladins
Humans for spirit
Shaman
its one race or the other
Druid
One race or the other
If your big into getting rep for factions...go with a human for the rep bonus. Undead is good for grinding with cannabilize, and underwater breathing. Thats it basically.
Humes
70 Warlock
PVP Bonechewer Alliance
