I want a cell phone currently I have virgin mobile, prepaid, I want to switch to verizon, because most of my family is on it, and I just plan want a picture phone.

The plan is 450mins 39.99 + taxes and surcharges so I'm guessing 50 a month. I think I can pay that, with my workstudy checks, I get at least 120 every two weeks and no real other bills except for credit cards, I plan to have paid by June. So what do you think Should I go for it?

It is stupid.

You currently pay 20-40 a month and are on a very limited budget. You would increase that to 50 for little added functionality. Over a year it will cost you ~$250 more to get the phone you want.

Pay your credit cards first (we'll see if it is really June) and then maybe consider giving in to a want after you have taken care of your debt.

Rationalizing purchases like this are the hidden drains on people's money that puts them in a bind in the future. Keep your expenses low. Earn more than you spend.

I liked the other suggestion about buying a phone card and using a landline to call family, it's much cheaper. You can keep the pre-paid for 'emergencies'.

good luck!

If it were me, I'd not get the cell phone but get a calling card and call them from a land line.

After all, you stated that "I just plan want a picture phone" which means you don't really need it but want it.

You know you're going to go get it no matter what you're advised here becase you want it. Be careful of all the surcharges and extra fees.

I always thought work/study checks were for paying for school and not cell phones and credit cards. You learn something every day.

Be careful...a lot of these plans have hidden usage charges called casual usage data (or similar). That is where the big charges come in. For example, if you download a ring tone that you think is only $3...it ends up being alot more because of the memory you are using. I think taking pictures and downloading anything also will add up.

If your family is already on Verizon, you can get a plan where talking to them any time of day, or to any other Verizon cell, won't count toward your minutes. That way you can easily stay within the plan allowance.

Sounds reasonable to me.
