What is the difference between "soulmate" and "lover"? Can these terms be used interchangeably?

Lover can be just a physical relationship but soul mate implies a deeper emotional and intellectual connection.

According to how I interpret these words, a person can have only one soulmate whereas he/she can have several lovers.
