If you need a free one then I'd definitely go for the AVG Anti-Spyware free version. Be careful about downloading just any old anti-spyware programme from the internet as some of these have spyware already installed. Sounds daft but, sadly, true. Read around a bit and see wht others are recommending.

i recommend the following
go to the microsoft home page, go to downloads and get windows defender
it is a real time, anti-virus, anti-spyware software that updates daily (if you will set it to do that, scans the computer constantly) but does not affect CPU time.
I also run norton anti-virus with firewall so I have a 3 layer protection
the windows defender can be networked to alert microsoft of an attack on your computer which then alerts the rest of the world of the coming attack. It also allows your computer to be alerted if there is an attack in some other area of the world.
i have that option turned on, and have been virus free for 2 years now, spy ware free for 2 years now, and i like it
good luck to you
email me if I can be of further help to you

Comodo BOClean
BOClean scans in real time, meaning it is always working, not like some of the other free programs like Adaware. Adaware is very good at removing spy-ware after you are infected. BOClean monitors all programs accessing memory and stops them before they can install
While you are there, you may want to checkout their new firewall and anti virus.
Been using them for years. Good Stuff for free.

Windows Defender (no, I'm not a noob)
EDIT: I stopped ising Adaware and Spybot years ago because they kept ruining legitimate parts of programs I was using that WAS NOT spyware or adaware, such as Quicken and such. If you just surf or play games, then they are fine, but if you use your PC for running programs, doing finances, or anything that us old folks would use it for, then steer away from Adaware and spybot.

I used piratebay.org to download Kazpersky Virus and anti-spyware protection. If you go on the website they explain exactly what you need to download any programs etc. Also, the password for unlocking the software is also included as well........
