I have gotten her jewelry and books the last few years and want to get her something different. She is 60 and doesn't need anything cause she always goes out and buys things herself. Any suggestions?

A friend of ours told us about the same thing, coming over to her parents' house and finding gifts still stacked, unused and unopened. They had brought dish sets, hand towels, etc. but these gifts were never used! So there is something in common.

Gift cards or certificates may seem a little impersonal but they are still useful. My mother is in her 70's and reasonably well-to-do but there were a couple times that she needed a new microwave oven (was she dropping hints that Christmas?) so one trip to a department store and presto! Mom had a much better microwave and she was so happy! A similar instance a few years before that when she was complaining about her coffee maker (again, hints?? I never was too good about picking up on those!). One trip, one new coffee maker, and one happy Mom.

Lots of the other responders have given good ideas and I hope you and your mother will have a wonderful Christmas this year.

Pedicure or Manicure

Gift Certificates for her Hair

Take her out for lunch/movie/sporting event/ theater production

Christmas Ordament - special for mom. Better yet a dated one from Halmark and there you go you have a gift for her each year for the rest of your lives.

A good book - The Secret

Think about some of the memories she had from Christmas and try and recreate.

Go through old photos of Christmas and buy picture frame ordaments for the tree and fill them with memory pictures

Take her on a drive to see Christmas lights, have christmas music in the car and then out for dinner.

Give things that are in her home that are time to be changed. Towels/blender/toaster...

Apple Ice Wine

Sign her up for a course in the community with you. Either making Christmas Cards/cooking. The time spent with you is important. Seriously one of the best gifts I gave my mom was a woman's retreat. If was a a full day of breakfast with a speaker, sleigh ride, forcing bulbs, advice from an interior decorator, shopping, dessert buffet. I also gave this to my sister and grandmother and to this day she talks about it (so do the others). It really was a special memory and cherished memory for all of us.

Make her something. I assume you have children and you could order for about $60 a photo blanket with them on it. That would mean alot to her. Go to JoAnn and buy some fleece material... if she likes leopard get her that. Maybe a sports team. Cut the ends 2 inches and tye them together.

Giftcard for a place that she regularly goes or has a hobby. I get sewing shop card for mom that quilts. That way she won't have to feel at all guilty on a splurge item.
Do something like a family picture and get her a nice print. Think outside the box for something that would be meaningful to her.

make her a basket of baked goods or a spa treatment. Try giving her a book of poems you wrote yourself...homemade gifts are always the best! Or you could also make a scrap book of all evnts you remember and stuff!
Merry Christmas!

Does she like to cook? There are always new cooking gagets coming out. I want a grill top that fits on your stove's burners so that you can grill indoors.
