I can't do the same thing every year. I do something different. I did an entirely red/white tree with candycanes, red balls, and a big red bow.
The next year I did all green and gold. All the ornaments were green--some green and glitter, some just plain green balls. We also did different shaped gold ones, and I think some wood ornaments too.
This year it's very natural. Wooden ornaments, poinsetta blooms, and homemade cinnamon ornaments. Perhaps some apples and birds. I think we will string popcorn as well. We have a red and gold bow at the top that has gingerbread men printed on it.
Partly because as newlyweds we didn't have any ornaments and didn't want to pay a fortune to buy all the ornaments we want. As we travel we will collect different ornaments b/c I always preferred my grandmothers Christmas tree. She had all types of ornaments including a lobster from Maine, a singing snowman, and two bells from my father and my uncle's first Christmas's as a newborn.
But I like having the tree different each year. If the color theme changes each year, it better represents the mood of the house and your personality at the time. One year I may even do silver tinsel. Once we have children, the bottom of the tree will be edible just in case. Last year our puppy was brand new and the bottom of the tree was sparce so that he didn't hurt himself.
It's a 6 ft, prelit tree. I hate multicolored lights--there is something about blue and orange that looks tacky to me. I don't usually like garland, but do have ribbons that trail down each side from the bow. I have put strings of pearls/beads around it as well. And lots of different ornaments that have meaning to me.

We have a multi color fiber optic tree that has some silver garland built into the light strands so we don't have to mess with lights or garland. Have a angel as a tree topper. We usually go get new ornaments every year that have a special meaning to us or a favorite character/collectible to add with what we have.

We put ours up about the middle of December. It's a pre-lit tree with multi-colored lights. We decorate it very traditionally, with red and gold glass balls, little brass musical instrument ornaments, several homemade ornaments the kids made, some that were on my parents tree when I was a kid, and garland ropes of gold beads, stars, and teeny tiny musical instruments. We put a white satin and lace angel on top.

My gurlfriend and I purchased a white pre-lit tree. Stands 6.5 ft. I hate garland, so none of that. There are black glitter snow-flakes (wal-mart $3.99 for 30). There are silver (bulbus) stars, and burgundy ornament balls.
It's the first year we've decorated in prodominantly black and white. First thought was kinda drab, but it's actually quite elegant looking. I was impressed.

Start with the colored lights, then ornaments, and finally tinsel. Their is no theme, the ornaments are a bunch of random ones that we've gotten as gifts over the years... it gives the tree a nice homely feel. After our 'special' ornaments we will use tradition balls to fill in the holes. We also try to hang the shiny ornaments by the lights so that the colors reflect off of them giving the appearance of more lights.

We use the clear big indoor/outdoor lights for our tree. I also put different ornaments I have collected over the years, even some I made when I was a child. Then I add bright green balls, and red glitter sticks. It all looks very original and I like it.

Our's is pre-lit with white lights. All our ornaments are shades of gold, purple and pink. We have a good mix of "fancy" ornaments and plain balls. There is a gorgeous purple and gold angel on top we received as a wedding present and I attached long strings of thick (5 inch) ribbon to the inside of the angel so it flows down the tree. I looooove it! :o)

We have 2 trees. We call them the fire and ice trees.
The fire tree is done in red lights and all the ornaments are from nature. It has birds, bird nests, animals, and many home made ornaments made from grapevines, sticks, pine cones, acorns, berries, dried seed heads and flowers.
The ice tree is all blue and white lights and all the ornaments are crystal and glass. It has many glass and crystal icicles on it.
