I sent an email to my dad yesterday asking him what he and his girlfriend would like for Christmas (I never know what to get them). I expected his return email to ask me what I wanted for Christmas, because I had asked him. Well, apparently he's not so quick on the uptake, so I'm wondering how to drop a hint without sounding like a brat.

My sister (2 years younger than me) has already asked for snow tires for Christmas from him, and is driving down to his town to get them put on today. She has a better--more understanding (on his part) relationship with him, there has always been some animosity between he and I. I am trying to repair our relationship, so I want to be nice, and not demanding an expensive present (I just want a sweater from Garnet Hill). While my sister gets $400 snow tires, I'm afraid to ask for a $150 present because of what our past relationship has been like. He's always gotten my sister the better presents. How can I ask in a good way for what I want?

Maybe suggest to go shopping with the girlfriend to pick out a present for her and your Dad. You can't be blamed if you conveniently find something you would like.
Besides the girlfriend may be more prone to satisfy your wants to gain your good graces. A little manipulating, I know, but effective nevertheless.
Either that or get your sister to tell him what you want.

First off, he is a man, that should tell you enough. As men, we know nothing about feeling and such. Tell him exactly what you want. Why be afraid to ask him all he can do is say no. Just drop him an email saying that you would like the sweater, size, etc. maybe a url so he can see it online. That's the best way.
Good luck and I hope you get your sweater.

I don't think you'd be sounding like a brat if you told him what you wanted. The fact that he didn't ask you what you wanted isn't a big surprise...men are oblivious as you said earlier. I would maybe bring up the nice gift he got your sister and then mention that you would like a much cheaper present than your sister's and tell him about the sweater and see how it goes. Hopefully he will receive this information and act on it appropriately since he already spent so much money on your sis.

Dads are sometimes a little thick without meaning to be. i assume that he told you what he wanted so I would just e mail back and say that you know how hard it is to figure out what to get others and that you know that your sister had already given him an idea of what she would like so you wanted to give him a few choices to make his life easier if he was wondering what you would like. List three or four things that you would like to have at various costs. You may or may not get what you want but at least you will have given him the chance to step up to being a good Dad.

Find a catalogue of what you want, leave it open on the page of the thing you want, and circle the item you want. Make sure he finds it and when he does, take it away with some excuse and put it on a table somewhere. When you leave the room theres a high chance he'll go over and read what it is you want. I hope it works for you.
P.S. Why on earth does your sister want snow tires :S
