In ht early stages it is ok, but once you get to the third trimester you have to sleep on your left side.

If you're massively protruding (late pregnancy), then there is a statistically significant possibility that your own body could do some harm when sleeping on your stomach. However, the *likelihood* is not great. Talk with your OB/GYN. (S)he can answer the questions in the way you will need them answered.
As for sleeping on your back...I, for the life of me can't see how that would harm the baby, other than YOU might be short on sleep due to the mass of your belly and the baby resting on the organs of your abdomen. If you need to, go out and buy a "Body Pillow"...it can *help* you stay on your side (although it can't stop you from rolling over).

Pick a side right or preferably left and learn to sleep on it. Is is not good to sleep on your back or tummy when pregnant. You give up so much for your baby when pregnant what's the huge deal in giving up a sleeping position or two?

I don't know about harmful, but in my personal experience, once I had a "Baby Bump" (At 3 1/2 mos. for me), it was just plain uncomfortable. This is a question you should ask your OB/GYN, if you are really concerned. A suggestion if you aren't quite comfortable sleeping on your side; get a full length body pillow. They help support your upper leg and arm, keeping your spine from being twisted. It will also help position your lower shoulder to keep that arm from going numb from impeded circulation.

Early in pregnancy, sleeping on your back and stomach aren't a problem and if you're comfortable that way, go for it!
As you get further along, though, not only will it be uncomfortable sleeping on your stomach...but laying flat on your back can compress blood vessels that run behind your uterus. The good news is that just putting a pillow behind your back to tip you just a smidge will take care of that!
Good luck!

When the baby gets weighty, yes, your doctor does not want the weight of your baby to press on your inferior vena cava, an important blood vessel that goes through your abdoman and pelvis. Lay on your side and support the weight of your baby with a pillow. A lot of people like those "body pillows" I recently saw them in Walmart.

It doesn't hrt the baby to sleep on your tummy because the baby is well protected. I have read abit about this myself, and from everything I have read you can sleep anyway that is comfy.
On your sides with you knees slightly bent is the most common and more recamended way, but if you can get comfy on your back or tummy it shouldn't hurt the baby.
If you are still worried about this, bring it up at your next appointment.

Hey,
Yes i heard its bad to sleep on your stomach and back whilst pregnant.
Im 37 weeks pregnant and i sleep on my side/stomach with a pillow between my legs and arms. I cant sleep on my back because it hurts my back and i get real bad leg cramps when i sleep on my back.
I think every woman is different, you need to find a position that suits you.
Good luck and take care.

you can sleep on your tummy until it become uncomfortable to you. after about 25 weeks the safest way to sleep is on your left side because it ensures unobstructed blood flow through the body. if you wake up on your back you should roll back onto your side. and if you wake up on your back gasping for air you need to call the doctor, it could mean the blood flow was obstructed and the baby is not getting enough.

They say you should not sleep on your back in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters because your uterus pushes on a major vein so if you sleep on your side it helps release the pressure and helps blood flow.
