There are lots of ways to make your own kit. The downside...its not going to be much cheaper. No matter what, you will need a decent sized turbo, intercooler, plumbing, some electronics and light work under the hood. That is all for a slightly-more-than-modest power gain unless you spend an *** load to get over 500hp.

You should just ditch the turbo idea, and slap a M3 motor in there. The S50B32/S52B32 will slide right in. $4k-ish if you watch your money. Thats a way better scenario anyways.

If you are dead set on a turbo, Holset Turbos makes some good units. HX series is the popular one on our cars. Then get an intercooler either from HKS or one of the other 'jap tuner' companies. I used the turbo and intercooler from a Porsche 935 that my buddies dad wrecked and sold me some cheap salvage parts. It wasn't the most powerful combo, but 300rwhp is decent. It can be done, but its no replacement for an ///M motor.

Buy an M3. Home-made turbos just don't work out and thoroughly engineered kits are quite expensive.

You want a faster car, go buy a faster car in this case. If it were a Chevy, I'd tell you something different.

Seriously, no.

If you do anything to increase the HP of your car, you will void your insurance. So if you get in an accident you will find yourself in a world of financial hurt.

Also when you come to sell the car, you won't get credit for your modifications. In fact the best case scenario for you is that you don't tell your potential buyer, and hope they never find out. If you tell your buyer that you modified the car it will really hurt the resale value, because no one wants to buy a car that's been modified and thrashed by some boy racer.

The most ecomonical way to get more power is to sell your car and buy a used E36 M3.

The only problem is you most likely will end up with a car that has been trashed around, so check for chassis and subframe stress cracks.
