I am writing a paper, and I am having trouble defining this. I mean, sooo many people say they don't like a band because they are too 'mainstream'.
I used to think that it meant the band was on MTV, but I believe Chiodos and Escape The Fate are on one of their channels...so I am just trying to get a general consesus...
Thanks

So maybe there is like different levels of mainstream...like Top 40 mainstream, hardcore mainstream, etc.
I'm starting to think the internet might have something to do with this...

Define Mainstream

Main stream in many peoples oppinion are bands that are widely know from obsessive amounts of radio play or tv time. While this doesn't generally mean that the band is band it tends to give light to bands that arent very talented. But really anyone that generally believes that they don't like a band because they are to "mainstream" is basically talking out of their butt. Ask any band and one of the main things they want to do is have everyone hear their music i/e be "mainstream"

Any artist or group that gets heavy media saturation, like MTV appearances, heavy rotation on the radio, making the Billboard top 100, MtV's Top 20 Countdown, etc.

Britney Spears is "mainstream" because you see and hear about her EVERYWHERE.

Bjork and Tori Amos, both of whom have had very respectable music careers and have HUGE worldwide followings, are NOT mainstream; you never hear either of them on the radio, haven't seen either on MTV in a LONG time (and even then, they were only on "120 Minutes" which came on at midnight)

"Mainstream" is basically those artists and groups you can't escape, but wish you could...

I'm gonna tell you what 'mainstream' means to me. Mainstream means when a band like Escape The Fate at first isn't really heard of, and then they pick up 35,000 new fans. Then you get on myspace, and everyone's profile song is ETF, then people at your school are wearing their shirt. That to me is a mainstream band. I would deffinitley consider Chiodos and ETF as mainstream. Mainstream doesn't also have to be just music, it can be other things as well.

Mostly top 40 and stuff that might be played in non-music related stores (Ikea, girlie shops at malls, etc).
Basically, look at the track listings for the thousands of "Now Thats What I Call (crappy) Music!" You'll get the idea.

Dictionary style: A non-offensive music that appeals to the masses. It is often familiar, but varies with every generation. Acts as an umbrella term to classify this pattern of music, in different genres, into one deliverable source for mass media.

Mainstream bands are the ones if you turn on the local top 40 radio station they would be playing. I don't necessarily call Chiodos or Escape the Fate mainstream because if you turn on MTV Hits or whatever, they wouldn't be on there. Plus, their current tours would be advertised like hell if they were mainstream. Somewhat like Fall Out Boy's recent tour. Remember hearing about that Honda tour all over the place? I sure do!

top forty would be mainstream. like, the annoying "pop" music station thats all, "new music" when the song came out six months ago. and the people who think that panic at the disco's emo *vomits*.

mtv2 doesnt count.

escape the fate = love.

Honestly, I think the term is pretty subjective as far as giving examples of it goes...what I consider to be mainstream may not be what the guy over there thinks. I think that's completely dependent on your frame of reference.

But in its most basic terms, I think it would be anything that is recognizable and accepted by a majority of people.
