I am particularly keen on answers from teenagers on this question. MY son wants just money for Christmas. He's 17. It will be the first ever year I've not bought him gifts. Do you think it's okay to give money at christmas?
My son says he hates getting random gifts he does not want. Can any of you identify with this?

i can understand where he is coming from. Although i think he would be a bit disappointed if he got nothing to open on christmas day.
In my family my parents and grandparents will usually give me money but also buy me a few small presents like Cds or DVDs or something

Not a teenager by a long way but I am with your son on the random gifts. Every year for twenty years my family have asked me what I want for christmas, every year I have said book tokens and I have never ever had one. It is really annoying when someone asks me what I would like and then decides to buy me something else that they want me to have but I probably don't want. If your son wants money then give him money otherwise don't ask.

I was the exact same way as you son last year and my mom gave me money. Later she said that it was easier to give me money because then I could pick what I wanted and it put less stress on her. I really liked it because I didn't know what I really wanted for christmas so I couldn't tell anyone what I wanted so i asked for money. Also there are really good deals the day after christmas so I got more for the money I got for christmas.

I'm not teenager any more but at 17 I most certainly went through a phase of wanting money to buy myself a real bargain in the sales!!! I've got nieces of ten who want money!!!! That I don't really approve of because the magic of xmas is slipping away. I give my son some money plus a couple of pressies.

If you give your son money your giving him the freedom to choose his own gift as he may not like what your buying him but won't tell you as he won't want to hurt your feelings
as a young person i can identify with this i've spent years getting gifts i don't want or like just put a limit on how much money you want to give your son
still buy your son token gifts to put inside a Christmas stocking like toiletry products stationery items little gadgets gift tokens sweets

Yeah money is fine for teenagers, no offence but parents are not good at buying 'teenage gifts' they tend to be a bit 'uncool'... at least with money they can get what they really want. Maybe get him a few little suprise gifts that are a bit daft and boyish. I always asked for money for xmas when I was a teen, but I liked getting a few little funny bits too!

LOL, not a teenager anymore but I do remember a Christmas where my older brother asked for cash. My parents gave hima huge wrapped box that contained another, smaller, wrapped box and so on until he finally got to the money. He was happy he got what he wanted and we all had a nice laugh.

If he wants cash then give it in the form of a gift card. To somewhere that he likes. Then it shows that you at least put some effort and thought into it, and yes the thought really does count!

perfect solution...get him gift cerificates at some of his favorite stores and it seems a little more thoughtful than getting cold hard cash haahahaaa
besides a 17 year old is fickle and silly anyway. He just being a typical kid. He may never be "satisfied" but what he gets for christmas

Hi, my opinion split the gift in 2. a small gift and a small bit of money that way he can get what ever he wants out of the money. keep the receipt in case he wants to exchange the gift
