My friends and their family were robbed while on vacation. They rented a house in a gated community at the Windsor Palms Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. The house was literally in plain view to the security office. The robbery occurred in broad daylight.
The thieves stole cash and a laptop. All of those things can be replaced. However, the real loss was all of the pictures of their 4 month old, which were on the laptop. They were told after the robbery that there had been another robbery the day before, just a few doors down.

Is there anything that they can do? The owner of the house doesn't have insurance that covers the renter's property. The Resort refuses to admit that there is asecurity issue. And my friends want to try to put it behind them, but it is difficult because they realize that all of those pictures are gone.

The first thing they should have done is to file a police report. Probably not much can be done at this point. However, there *is* a security issue at the resort, and they need to address this issue.

This is a life lesson learned the hard way. In all my travels, never, ever have I left cash or any other valuables in my hotel room while I was not in it. It's just too much of a risk. I'm aware this was a home and not a hotel room, but still, the same concept applies. Why even take the chance? As for the pictures, I've lost too many pictures myself to computer crashes, theft, etc. It would be in your best interest to find a site to upload your pics for storage. There are some free sites, and some inexpensive ones that charge a nominal annual fee, and will host all your photos. They'll be accessible from any computer anywhere that way.

Florida has a big drug problem and the police aren't worth a s..t.Sorry ,if you don't investigate yourself,it wan't get done.Just find out where the parties are every night around you. This will tell you who works or not...Maybe someone child that is hooked.I know of a woman that had a contract to fix all the washing machines and driers and was going into people houses and robbing them ,to feed her drug habit. She now works the villages, belliview and the Ocala area and people still hire her.
I moved because I had a problem with a crack house and crime rising in our neighborhood and it took the police 4 years to do anything. This was after the good people moved out.
Someone on drugs ,does not care how they get money for it,or who they hurt.If it is gated then the problem is near and probably the least known...

They should check with their credit card company if that's how they paid for the rental. They need to dispute the rental charge. If they provide a copy of the police report to the card company they may have travel protection.
At the very least they should receive a refund from the landlord for the stolen merchandise. The should also turn the landlord in to the local housing department for not providing coverage.

Sorry about the loss of the pictures. They're gone; the laptop has been cannibalized by now.

If they are homeowners, they should check their HO coverage. Most policies cover theft away from home. My laptop was stolen from my car and my HO covered it.

Be sure to get a police report.

there's probably nothing they can do about the pictures unless they had them on a webalbum or something, but whoever owned the house is responsible for covering the loss. I'd say get an attorney, just because the owner doesn't have insurance doesn't mean he isn't responsible.

File a police report and write things up on Trip Advisor on the property with the problem.

Nothing can be done except report it and hope for the best, data can be retreived using special equipment even if it has been deleted.
