Let x = the number.
1/3(x) =5/6
x/3 = 5/6
Multiply the equation by 6:
6x/3 = 5
2x = 5
Solving for X, divide the equation by 2:
x = 5/2, the number

I love Math questions...maybe I should've majored in Math...
one-third of something is 5/6
now we have an equation...equations are good
1/3 of something = 5/6
solve for "something" by multiplying both sides by 3 to get rid of the fraction
your answer is 5/6 times 3 or, simplified, 5/2

1/3 of x = 5/6
The people above are getting the answers by inverting (turning upside down) the 1/3.
Just wanted you to know where the "3" in their calculations came from. The "1" in that fraction disappeared because 1 times anything is the same.

ok i do help you,
solution:
let x = is the number,
from the question,
(1/3) x = (5 / 6)
solve for x,
cross multiply, the equation
6 x = 15
x = 5 / 2
x = 2.5 is the number.
to check, substitute x in the equation
(1/3) (5/2) = (5/6)
5 / 6 = 5 / 6
hope you got it!
