Rebooting is just another term for turning your computer on and off.

There are two kinds of reboot: a cold boot and a warm boot. With a cold boot the computer is completely shut off. You do that by going to Start - Turn off Computer - Turn off. On a warm boot, the computer powers down, but does not cut off completely. You do that by going to Start - Turn off Computer - ReStart. Sometimes the alt-ctrl-del keys works with all three are pressed down at the same time two times in a row.

You should never unplug your computer or press the off button on the computer without having the computer turn itself off as explained above first - unless, of course the computer is completely frozen, in which case you have no choice.

"Reboot" comes from the old term "pull yourself up from the bootstraps," which is essentially what a computer does when it is restarted. It reloads certain files and drivers that may have for some reason stopped working or been changed, that is why you have to reboot after a Windows update, and empties the memory cache, thereby freeing up memory.

A reboot can often solve a computer problem.

Reboot a computer can solve some problems with the computer, such as if it should stop responding to keyboard commands.
A "cold" reboot is when the computer is turned off completely, and turned back on. A "warm" reboot is accomplished by simply pressing the key combination of "Ctrl-Alt-Del" at the same time. Press the 3 keys together and release, the computer will reboot. If all goes as it is desired, the problem should be resolved. If not, then the problem needs to be found by other means.

Depending on your operating system this procedure may vary. Click on Start>Shutdown. Confirm at prompt. Rebooting is necessary to release memory being held by programs either running in the background or improperly holding onto system resources. I recommend doing it at least weekly.

Push the power button.

The computer has rebooted.

It is not necessary at all. You can buy a computer, keep it running until the software makes some non-sense that could necessitate rebooting.
