Read John Julius Norwich's history of Byzantium.
I don't have it here but during one of those crusades I think the crusaders sacked Byzantium and it never really recovered. The Byzantines lost territory and population so that the Ottoman tide became irresistible. Because of the schism the western Christians were demanding the Byzantines come back under the control of the pope. The emperor eventually was desperate enough to persuade his people to agree but even then the help that was offered never really materalised. The west seemed incapable of understanding how Byzantium had acted as a shield to them for centuries. Eventually the Turks got as far as the gates of Vienna.

Western Europe wanted allies along the Crusaders route. Why fight on two fronts, when the winner of the Byzantine/Ottomon fight may provide an ally...the winner. And, more likely than not, the Knights Templar had 99% to say about who would fight who in the Middle East. They were the true power behind Crusade politics. Elysabeth Faslund...Poemhunter.com

Europe didn't help Byzantines because they didn't care about it because it was Orthodox country and pope didn't want to help anyone who isn't catholic, lather when he realized how dangerous Ottomans are he sent Crusaders and in their "quest" to free the Jerusalem, but they weren't strong enough to hold it. Another thing is that Byzantines emperor owed them some money and he didn't have it at the moment and so that is why they attacked Constantinople.

The European crusaders didn't really care about the Byzantines. In the end, the Crusaders got tricked into invading Constantinople and sacking it.

are these two questions because they are opposed questions if you try to read them
Or it's only one question?
I know that ottomans appeared on scene later on, not during the crusades. I guess Byzantines helped the crusaders since the crusaders had to travel trough the east roman empire on their way to Jerusalem.( at least that was one route)
