Wild animal do not recognize some emotions like a smile. However they do recognize fear. Showing the teeth is like an expression of threat, and they can feel fear, or at the minimum, threatened.

Because when you smile you show your teeth. That looks like a snarl to an animal. Especially since when you smile at someone, you look directly into their eyes. That's a threat to an animal.

i noticed too when you look at some dogs, they become agitated
I think it make them aware that you might do something that they don't like.

Animals feel threatened when you stare at them. It doesn't matter whether you are smiling when you stare.

I suppose showing of teeth makes them think that you are going to attack them. They are unable to smile, so its really pointless smiling at them. talking to them softly and lovingly gives them a message of friendship and love;
