Since McCain is the only one of the candidates that has ever actually been tortured, I'll yield to his judgment.
Those such as PNAC who claim that water boarding causes no permanent physical or psychological damage are simply uninformed on the issue.

to those who answered it is NOT a torture, you must have read the letter of former AG Gonzalez wherein he argued only something which causes pain equivalent to loss of a limb can be considered torture, he also called Geneva Conventions *quaint*. How would YOU like to be subjected to waterboarding ? It ain't so bad, right ? (It was called torture even in middle ages, BTW)
To answer your question: HANOI HILTON.
EDIT: PENELOPE, Chinese water torture causes NO permanent physical damage, but I bet it would make you a barking-mad maniac within 48 hours, care to try it ? It is strictly a psychological technique... Is it OK with you ?
EDIT2: STEVE, " The Geneva convention applies to Military Personnel who are fighting for a country!" BZZZZTTTTT!!!
wrong answer, NO SOUP FOR YOU!!! I served also, and resent your remarks, thank you for your service.

The Geneva Conventions designates waterboarding as torture.
The United States of America has been prosecuting waterboarding for over 100 years.
Waterboarding is torture. One cannot talk around it, or over it, or bypass it.
Any person who says otherwise is a sycophant making excuses for bush, and/or is a sadist themselves.
That would only be for the individual themselves to know, of course.

The guy experienced torture... and some still have the balls to question wither or not he knows what he is talking about... If you think its not torture then next time a child does wrong, spare the rod, give water boarding a try...
If its not torture, how could it be abuse?

People found guilty of crimes are protected by law from torture in most countries. What all the pro torture people forget, is that it is mainly suspects who are tortured.
Torture will eventually prove successful and other 'suspects' will be named.
Once a society enshrines the use of torture in law, everybody becomes liable to torture as a suspect. Legislators who enacted such a law, would thus be liable to torture on the whim of anybody who cared to denounce them.

Perhaps because John McCain is the only true American Hero running.
Perhaps his unfortunate experience at the hands of the North Vietnamese captors give him a real first hand experience of what torture is and what it does and does not accomplish.

Because as a former POW rather than a draft dodger he knows what torture is.
PNAC - why was waterboarding a crime when we prosecuted Japanese soldiers for it after WW2?

McCain didn't win my vote with that one. Who cares if it is or isn't torture. The Geneva convention applies to Military Personnel who are fighting for a country! If it will stop a terrorist attack and save one American life, I support torturing any damn terrorist that we need to. We did not start this fight but if you ignorant hippies stay out of our way long enough we will win it.
