I believe it is to be able to store more data. I once had a project and we couldn't use a not-the-latest version of ms excel (i suppose you refer to ms excel) for statistical analysis because it couldnt hold the data in one sheet.

The demand for larger spreadsheets has grown over the years. Excel now has 65,536 rows, from 16,384.

So you can create large spreadsheets.

I had one once that used 10,000 rows x 12 columns. It was great, served a good purpose and kept people off my back.

I just corrected that to 10,000, sorry
