Norton's website has an uninstall tool you can download. It is free and works very well (no more Norton). I finally got rid of Norton after I spent 3 months trying to get rid of Norton error messages. I now have F-secure and I'm happy with it. It takes up much less space on my computer's hard drive (more room for mp3 files!!) and my computer boots up much quicker.

Use the Norton uninstall tool mentioned above.
The other excellent alternatives to Norton are Kaspersky antivirus and NOD32. They are both much lighter on resources with higher detection rates.
Good luck.

If you cannot find norton in the add remove programs secsion of control panel, then you will have to goto the norton site to uninstall it, and yes, you have to remove one AV program fully before instaling another, otherwise conflicts can and offten will occur that could cause your computer to crash.

Norton is a brute to get rid of. It usually leaves all sorts of rubbish in your registry even if you remove using Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs. Go to the Norton web site here http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?OpenDocument&lg=en&ct=us&seg=hho&src=hot
and download their removal tool. This still doesn't remove everything from your registry but it gets rid of about 98%.
