This is a warning to those majoring in sociology. There are certain college majors that will not do anything in terms of employment after graduation unless the students goes beyond the Bachelor's Degree level. Sociology is one of them.

I graduated with a sociology degree from Lehman College with a 3.25 GPA in 1994. For the last 13 years, I have been working in odd, per diem jobs like security guard and also as a sub teacher (the worst job in the school system).

I am not knocking down sociology. I am sure that sociology is a great route into a good job AFTER the B.A. level. I majored in sociology because it was (not sure if it is today) a 30-credit major and a quick ticket out of college. My true love is math but at age 42, I feel too old to consider majoring in math.

Sociology students, you have been warned! Select sociology if you wish but please remember that the value of a sociology degree to an employer is beyond the B.A. level. Your Reply?

I agree with you. I graduated with a 3.969 in Psychology and I have found the same thing. If you don't get an advanced degree with a license you cannot get a job in the field. I am 42 also, and I have never been in a job in the field of Psychology. My background is in accounting, 20 years experience and I have had no problem getting a job in that field. Even without an accounting degree.

Sociology is probably not the best major for getting a great job right out of college. I would suggest Soc. majors look at:

for some guidance. College students should also prepare themselves for life after college. First, learn to write. Second, grow up and know the world doesn't owe you a job. Get experience through part-time work or volunteering.
