I think the first thing you have to do is be brave enough to show your tru personality to yourself, as in get to know yourself very well, know your good parts and your bad parts.
I don't think people ever really reveal their true selves to everyone though, people always modify themelves at least a bit to suit those around them, this may be unconscious - but we still do it.
I don't necessarily think it's about bravery, I think it's about how comfortable you feel with yourself and others.

Personally, I don't consider this to be a healthy thing. To put your flaws as well as your better qualities on display, although this may be intended to show your honesty and the lack of fear of being honest, others may take advantage of that as well as be repulsed at what they learn or see.
There is nothing wrong with you, but people are always going to be suspect of others who are so open. I can't go into it in so much detail, I myself haven't really grasped the complete psychology of it.
As a good analogy for what you're asking about though, if you were to play poker with you friends and only you played with all of your cards exposed, how would you win? You can't bluff because people know your cards.

I don't think it is necessarily brave to show your personality. Sometimes it is brave to present a different front to the world and keep your personality to yourself. If you are living a life that follows your morale compass, are you not showing your true personality? Personalities also change and grow as our years change and grow.

If you put on a front it feels false. You will most likely end up not liking yourself for conforming just to please. Or you take the risk of being yourself and people hating it. That is not easy but its better than the alterative in my eyes. Not everyone will love you even if you are false and will most likely see through it. If you are you and dont care what others think or say and dare to be you they will have to live with it. Some wont like you but you will know who your true friends are.
