how do security cameras work.? I would like to buy one for my home. How do I check it to see if anyone entered my house while I was away?. Any suggestions on what kind I can buy?

Normally, a security camera just do a recording into your harddisc. As you decribed, you can use a remote access to a server in your house and that server is recording what security camera viewing.
The other choice is something called tele-eye, which is actually a brandname, which allow users to take a remote view via their mobile PC.

Have a look at the IP cameras (also known as network cameras) made by Axis (good but expensive) and Panasonic (cheaper and not quite as good). They work over the internet, so you can access them remotely and see your house, which is great. Also you can program them so that, if they detect movement or sound, they will capture, say, a 30-second clip and upload it to a web site somewhere.
Don't go for cameras that store the images within the camera itself, or which record the images on a VCR or DVD at your house. Because if someone breaks in and steals the device, you won't have any evidence.

Depends on the type but they either have a tape that records them or like most new ones they have a hard drive that stores the video.
