I recieved a gift last weekend of a potted plant which is actually an olive tree. I'm clueless when it comes to gardening. Do i leave it in the pot and water it like a normal plant or do i plant it, if so when? I live in Ireland and we don't have the hot climate i'm only guessing you need to grown one of these. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks.

Leave it in the pot and keep it away from frost.

Olive trees are very slow growing generally and therefore will be a long time before you will have to replant it.

Do not overwater as they are resistant to reasonable drought conditions (they grow in countries that are hot and dry). Once a week should be enough, but not too much.

You need to know if the tree is fruiting or non fruiting I listed some links below for you and hope they help you about what to do since I don't think it would be productive in Ireland. Non fruiting on the other hand might just be what you need in Ireland.
Good Luck!

Olive trees are a Mediterranean native, and require a fairly balmy climate. In particular, they will not tolerate cold winters; if you experience temperatures below 15° Fahrenheit (-7°Celsius), plan on planting something else! They are shallow-rooted, so windy areas are problematic
especially with a fruit laden tree in a windy area. Olive trees are tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, they don't like wet feet.

Location: Plant olive trees in full sun and away from sidewalks to avoid stains from fallen ripe fruit. Non-fruiting trees are available which can be planted in areas where fruit may be a problem. Strong winds will "sculpt" the trees, but otherwise they are quite wind-tolerant.

non-fruiting are Skylark Dwarf, Little Ollie, and Wilsoni.
