while hotels are NOT RESPONSIBLE for lost belongings, it is perfectly safe to keep anything you want in your room. It is YOUR ROOM. assuming you're talking about a hotel and not a "motel" where you can rent rooms by the hour. Managers do background checks on housekeeping staff and most hotel employees have been in the industry their whole life and are not interested in ruining their career and ability to make a livelihood by taking your "valuables". Compared to a life's salary, your grandma's ring, or your laptop, is not very valuable.

Hey "Rainbow", I have to agree with your mum....unless these are really large things. But, the smaller things, (MP3 Player, ipod,--even laptop--I assume you'd have your cell phone with you)--you can have the management put these smaller (expensive) items in a safe at the front desk for you, and YOU hold the key. Do NOT trust the fact that they will be OK in your room---there are just too many people with a key (or some form of access to the room). NEVER leave ANYTHING in your room that has any form of your identity on/in it--it's way too easy to steal. And then, it's YOU who pays the price (sometimes many thousands of $$$) just trying to re-capture your own identity---long after your credit has been ruined, your bank accounts stripped, your credit cards maxed-out, etc. Take that extra few minutes to have any all of these type of blongings locked in the hotel safe. It's much better to be SAFE now than very SORRY later.

Many hotels have safes in the rooms for you to put your valuables; or you can lock them up in the hotel's safe at the front desk for safe-keeping. Note that when you're travelling in another country you should always have your passport with you for identification purposes.

Sure you can leave them but don't count on them being there when you return.Use the safe or bring them with you.I think most all hotels have not responsible for valuables somewhere in the small print

If it's something you absolutely can't afford to lose (passport) take it with you, screw the wall safe. Most hotels have a sign or clause about how they are not responsible for personal property.
